Before you make your choice, here’s a look at four interesting jobs within the medical field that you may not have considered yet and that you may wish to place on your shortlist.
Medical Scribe
A medical scribe is a really interesting job as you will be taking notes in real-time during a patient interview. The idea is that you are helping the physician you work with by freeing up their time to focus on patient care, while the scribe looks after the documentation. This position is often seen as a personal assistant to a physician. You’ll be immersed in the medical field, seeing things play out first-hand. If you want to be an emergency medicine scribe, you’ll need to enroll on an EPPA program.
What makes this path even more interesting is that it can be a pathway to other options. It’s very common for EPPA scribes to move on to dentistry, PA programs, a master’s program, PT/OT or medical school. Your background as a scribe will prove to be essential in each of those paths.
Physical or Occupational Therapist
Occupational therapists are very much in demand right now. Job growth is pretty impressive, which means it’s the ideal time to get into this field. As an occupational therapist, you’ll be working with patients who are disabled, ill or injured, helping them to go about their daily life as comfortably as possible.
Travel Nurse
If you have a love of travel and the medical field, why not combine your two passions and look into a career as a travel nurse? These nurses will be able to travel around the world, working in some of the most interesting locations. Travel nurses can be found in hospitals, clinics, patient homes and medical facilities. Some even work on cruise ships and at resorts.
To work as a travel nurse, you need to get your Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing so you can become a registered nurse. From there, you’ll need to ensure you have the proper certification or licensure to work in the various areas you travel to.
Speech-Language Pathologist
A speech-language pathologist is a career that doesn’t always come to mind but, again, it can be very interesting for the right person. You’ll need a master’s degree to work in this job and you will be assessing, diagnosing and then treating your patients. Besides speech problems, you will also work on swallowing disorders. Patients can range from children to adults. Some of the more common work environments include schools, hospitals and clinics.
